Our Turks Caicos Vacation

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying on the beautiful island of Prividentiales in the Turk and Caicos Island chain - part of the British West Indies. With no reservation I can honestly say everything was perfect. The island is advertised as being what the Bahamas was 20 years ago. It is called a "one stop light island" but I don't recall seeing the one stop light. It has one main road, Leeward, that is paved and a couple of stop signs but that was about it. The island has about a half dozen honest to goodness small resorts. We stayed at Ocean Club Resort which was fantastic. A very family oriented resort without the perky little hostess bugging you to sign up for volley ball.

The beaches were out of this world! White sand the consistancy of flour. With a beautiful reef surrounding the island there were never any 'knock you over" waves. This also results in the clearest ocean water I have ever seen. My bathwater at home isn't this clear even before I get in. All the beaches are considered public so you can virtually walk all the way around the island on the beach with no hassles. That wouldn't be too hard to do since the island is only 22 miles long and about 4 miles at its widest.

Our room, actually a condo, was fully equiped and modern. We even had a cloths washer and dryer complete with soap to use in it. The view from our balcony was nothing short of spectacular as you can see. I loved waking up each morning to this kind of view.

The weather, again, was perfect. We were there spanning the tail end of January through the first week of February. It sprinkled for about an hour the first day we were there and a couple of times in the late evening. Each time, the clouds would promptly go away after the short shower. Normally, the climate is very dry and you can expect to get more than enough sun shine - which we did. It was kool coming home in February with a dark natualr tan. My daughters were ready to kill!

Eating is fairly expensive. They have everything shipped in once a week. However, the food is so good, I quickly got used to eating hamburgers from $7.00 to $10.00. Speaking of money, this place blaizes its own trails. Even though they are a British Crown Colony, they use the US dollar and the US standard for electricity. To keep mother England happy they drive on the left side of the road.
